Traces are routes, roads and tracks - geographic links which lead from one town to the next. But traces are also recollections and remnants, indications of former times and pieces of bygone history. They are sources of remembrance. On two evenings, we will seek traces of Bulgaria and travel through the past and present, through the country's history and personal memories.
Traces of history and remembrance
A conversation between Albena Mihaylova, artist and film maker, and Georg Häsler, TV journalist and Balkans expert
Together with the artist Albena Mihaylova, who was born in Plovdiv (BU) but has been living between Switzerland and Bulgaria since 1995, we will seek the traces of her personal history. This journey through the present and the past is guided by questions, such as: When does history actually become your own family history? Where are the links between personal histories and the history of Bulgaria? What do the different faces of history look like? Can we manipulate history with our memories or do we manipulate history more by concealing them? Which role do topographical factors play in this respect? Albena Mihaylova will tackle these questions cinematically. She will enhance the conversation with raw material from her project ‹Tracks›, archive material, essays and family memories. Georg Häsler participated in Albena Mihaylova's production and will share his own experiences. He will participate in the conversation from the viewpoint of a TV journalist, documentary film maker and Balkans expert.
