The hugely popular band ‹Mostar Sevdah Reunion› - a unique musical ensemble from Mostar in Bosnia-Herzegovina - will kick off the BALKAN NIGHT, the finale of CULTURESCAPES 2013 in Berne. Back in 1999, the Bosnian sound engineer and producer Dragi Šestić decided to assemble a group of musicians from different ethnic backgrounds - Croats, Serbs, Bosnians - in the war-torn city of Mostar. Despite the many differences, these leading interpreters of traditional Balkan music believed in the unifying power of their art. And the experiment proved successful: Today, ‹Mostar Sevdah Reunion› is a much-travelled ensemble with fans all over the world. The band combines traditional Bosnian ‹Sevdah› and other types of music from the Balkans in new arrangements with rock, jazz, gypsy, blues, folk and soul. The result is wonderful songs with a fair sprinkling of melancholy, tragedy and desire.
‹Mostar Sevdah Reunion› will be followed on stage by the techno-electro duo ‹Black Water and Her Daughter› from Sarajevo. Andreja Dugandžić and Ilvana Dizdarević, who have been working together since 2007, are the only such female music project in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The dark minimal beats produced by the two very different, yet compatible, high-powered women result in an authentic, poetic experience. And then there is the after-show party with ‹Mc Cocs› and ‹Sevdah› for everyone who wishes to carry on dancing and partying.
