‹Matanë Malit› (eng. behind the mountain) is a musical homage to Albania. Elina Duni, who was born in 1981, deals with her roots from the point of view of a modern singer at ease with improvisation processes. Duni left Albania in 1992 at the age of ten - she rediscovered traditional Albanian songs after excursions into classical music, blues and jazz standards. These experiences shape her journey through Balkan folk songs - as well as her full awareness of their atmosphere, sounds, structures and meaning behind the words.
‹Matanë Malit› contains pieces about lovers, heroes, workers, shepherds, expatriates and songs of resistance: traditional songs, arranged by the Elina Duni Quartet, as well as completely new music which Duni has created in line with traditional beliefs. In recent years, the Elina Duni Quartet has developed into a subtle musical unit with a vast artistic reach that wonderfully and naturally moulds modal jazz and folklore. The musicians intensify Duni's words through their text-based input. The pianist Colin Vallon, who has long counted singers amongst his most profound influences, often seems to be the natural response to Duni's vocal style. The quartet, whose other two members are Patrice Moret (double bass) and Norbert Pfammatter (drums), can only be described as a harmonious and rounded unit.
