A group of reservists is abandoned at a ‹Checkpoint› (‹Kontrolni punkt›, Stubovi kulture, Beograd 2011; ‹Kontrollpunkt›, Schöffling 2013). None of them know what or who they should observe there, or against whom and why they should fight. This Kafkaesque situation witnesses strange encounters with refugees and a group of war correspondents, orgies, mass rapes and mysterious murders before the scenario suddenly transforms into a reality TV show.
With more intensity than any real coverage of war atrocities, ‹Checkpoint› illustrates the absurdity of war, the forlornness of the individual and the dehumanisation of society in an eerie-comical manner. David Albahari, born in Peć in 1948, studied in Belgrade and has been living in Canada since 1994. He has published nine volumes of short stories and 11 novels and is one of the best known Serbian writers.
