Ever since their first performance at the Music Biennale Zagreb in 2001, the members of the Cantus Ensemble have hardly changed under the continued artistic direction of Berislav Šipuš (*1958). The ensemble is devoted to modern and contemporary music, which was rarely heard in Croatian music halls up to the ensemble's foundation. Today, the ensemble primarily plays new music and is an integral part of the cultural scene in Croatia. But the Cantus Ensemble actually wants more than just that: It wishes to be a driving force in the performance of new musical styles. As one of the very few contemporary ensembles in Croatia it offers audiences a broad repertoire, based on the works of Stravinsky and Hindemith. To date, the ensemble has performed 400 works, among them 90 premieres of mainly Croatian composers. As part of national and international guest performances, the ensemble has gained vast experience in working with international solo artists and conductors. In Basel, the ensemble will be conducted by Ivan Josip Skender (*1981). Skender studied Composition and Conducting at the Academy of Music in Zagreb and has participated in numerous training courses and master classes. His compositions have won a vast number of awards. As a conductor, he mainly focuses on the works of contemporary composers from Croatia.
