Toni Kitanovski (*1964 in Macedonia) is a guitarist, composer, teacher, band leader and graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston. He is best known for his work with the gypsy brass band ‹Cherkezi›, which plays traditional songs from Macedonia, Albania, Serbia and Turkey, as well as jazz and Latin standards. Kitanovski's intuitive and highly acclaimed style of composition is inseparable from his guitar playing. His music has been interpreted by symphony orchestras and big bands and used as film scores. He teaches jazz at the Goce Delcev University in Macedonia and is actively involved in the development of the jazz scene in his home country.
Kitanovski's quartet consists of some of the best known musicians from the Balkans. All of the group's members are band leaders in their own right. Their music is a mixture of contemporary jazz, New Orleans Second Line, with influences from Africa, the Balkans and other kinds of world music. The percussionist Oscar Salas moved to Macedonia roughly two years ago. His collaborations with ‹Jaco› Pastorius, ‹Patato› Valdes, David Byrne and Arturo Sandoval are definitely worthy of mention. Kostas Theodorou is well known as a drummer and bass player. Vasil Hadžimanov has shared the stage with a whole host of internationally famous artists, such as Nigel Kennedy, Theodosii Spassov, Bachar Khalifé and Matt Garrison.
