The singer, flutist and composer Tamara Obrovac, who was born on a North Adriatic peninsula in the Croatian region of Istria, is one of the most versatile and important artists of the Croatian music scene. She combines jazz with the traditional music of her Mediterranean homeland, thus crossing the borders between various genres. Tamara pens her lyrics in Slavic and Romance dialects and also sings in ancient Istriot, a dialect that is no longer spoken. «Jazz is my freedom and my roots are my inner truth» is how Tamara describes her relationship to her artwork. She is well known for her spontaneous, innovative improvisations that are characterised by the spirit of freedom and humour as well as her amazing ability to communicate. Her music is full of surprises and her voice is awesome. In addition to her international concert activities, she is also an award-winning composer of theatre and film music. Together with her ‹Transhistiria Ensemble› she incorporates elements of Istrian and Mediterranean music, jazz and other contemporary styles in a skilful and natural manner. Far beyond time and geographical boundaries, the music becomes a universal artistic message with a unique musical twist.
