Barbi Marković (*1980) studied German in Belgrade and Vienna and works for the prestigious Belgrade publishing house Rende. Her first publication ‹Going Out›, a remix of Thomas Bernhard's novella ‹Walking›, is situated in the Belgrade club scene and caused quite a stir. In this remarkable transposition, Marković helps her audience identify how young people in Belgrade felt at the beginning of the new millennium and additionally shows how productively literature can actually be received. In 2011/12, Marković was a writer-in-residence in Graz, where she completed the first of three parts of her new, experimental project: At three locations in Graz, she collected all the adverts, warning signs and graffiti, as well as the opinions of passers-by and recompiled them in the book ‹Graz, Alexanderplatz›. Similarly experimental was her approach for ‹Das geteilte Belgrad› (Divided Belgrade), an issue of the ‹Lichtungen› magazine, in which the division of the city is not just tangible in a narrative sense. Every work by Barbi Marković ingeniously provides the reader with new perspectives.
