SOROKIN (*1955), a "cult figure in Russia" (Spiegel online), once again underlines his talent as a brilliant and enigmatic narrator. This book starts like a tale from the 19th century before evolving into a fantastic odyssey through a rural Russia of a not-too-distant future. A surprisingly subtle book by probably the best author in Russia today. Sorokin has made his name with a number of novels, such as »The Queue«, »Marina's Thirtieth Love«, »Blue Lard« and more recently »Day of the Oprchnik« and »Sugar Kremlin«. Sorokin is one of the most critical voices against the political elite in Russia and is regularly the target of groups loyal to the regime.
