The atmospheric Balzbar and the new Cube Concerts series of the Symphony Orchestra Basel invite you to a veritable Shostakovich party. Stylistic barriers are taboo here. The string quartet no. 8 in C minor is one of the most performed string quartets and a very personal musical autobiography of its composer Dmitri Shostakovich. The 4 note motif at the start of his ‹string quartet no. 8› is, when translated to German music notation, D-S-C-H, Shostakovich's initials. There are also numerous quotations of his own and other composer's compositions, e.g. Wagner's Funeral March from the Twilight of the Gods. The music of the four string players of the Symphony Orchestra Basel seamlessly combines with the electronic sounds of Kubus Media, making Shostakovich's melodies sound like distant echoes of the past.
