When Ivan Sokolov graduated from the Moscow Conservatoire in the 1980s with a degree in composition, the world around him was in an eventful period of change. The Iron Curtain was starting to show cracks, and in the West there was an ever-growing curiosity about the, until then, unknown contemporary Russian composers. At the same time, contemporary European classical music started to cross into Eastern Europe. For CULTURESCAPES 2012, Ivan Sokolov has composed a programme which reflects Moscow's immense musical cosmos at the end of the 20th century. Between what initially appears to be historically significant dates, 1968 (the Prague Spring) and 1993 (the Russian constitutional crisis), there are a number of exquisite works by famous Moscow composers who go beyond political boundaries with their original approach and musical virtuosity.
