Ivan Monighetti, described by Krzysztof Penderecki as «a phenomenal cellist», was Mstislav Rostropovich's last student at the Moscow Conservatoire. After winning the coveted Tchaikovsky Competition in 1974, Ivan Monighetti embarked on an international career which has seen him become one of the world's most sought-after musicians. Today, he pursues a career as a soloist and a conductor of international renown. Monighetti performs with such famous ensembles as the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, the Mariinsky Orchestra and the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. Besides his solo projects, he can be heard regularly at chamber music concerts in some of the world's most prestigious venues. Monighetti is a renowned specialist in the field of historically informed performances of the 18th century and a leading figure in the area of new music. He continues to broaden his musical horizons through cooperation with important contemporary composers. Ivan Monighetti currently lives in Switzerland, where he is a professor for cello at the Musik Akademie Basel.
