Pavel Florensky (1882-1937) was a mathematician, philosopher and theologian, who, after being declared a <counter-revolutionary>, spent ten years in a Soviet gulag before being executed. He wrote about the philosophical principles of the iconostasis, which is still relevant in religious contexts, and opened new perspectives for artistic works. The art historian, artist and icon restorer NINA GAMSACHURDIA examines the basic aspects of the iconostasis and presents the world of one of the greatest Russian painters of icons, Andrej Rublev (1360-1430); thereby opening up numerous questions and debates. Iconostasis: a threshold of time and space between Pavel Florensky and Andrej Rublev; considerations of the roles and the importance of these two great representatives of the Russian cultural identity; Florensky: religious philosopher and natural scientist; Rublev: medieval icon painter and philosopher of colour.
A screening of excerpts from Andrej Tarkovsky's film <Andrej Rublev> follows the event (8.30 pm).
