Daniel Zaretsky, the star organist from St Petersburg, will grace Basel Minster with an outstanding organ recital. Besides a repertoire of French Romanticism (Alexandre Guilmant, Eugene Gigout), Zaretsky will play traditional Russian-Soviet organ works which are less well known here. Featuring performances of compositions by Valery Kikta, Alfred Schnittke and Sergei Prokofieff, Zaretsky exemplifies the vitality of organ music during the Soviet period in his own unique style and proves once and for all that the organ is not solely an instrument for ecclesiastical purposes. Zaretsky has won numerous prizes in the Russian Federation and Western Europe, and has enthralled audiences in the largest concert halls throughout the Soviet Union. He is a soloist with the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra and is head of the organ department at the conservatoire in the city.
