Russian Orthodox chants have a special aura of mystery. For centuries they were only passed down orally in Russian monasteries as an ascetic form of prayer. The Patriarchal Choir of Moscow allows audiences to experience early Russian chants in their original form. The choir's director Anatoly Grindenko is a pioneer of historically informed performance in Russia. Today, the choir, which was founded in 1983 with religious order seminarians, consists of thirteen professional singers and also performs younger works by Dmitry Bortniansky or Sergei Rachmaninoff.
