The dear grandfather - he was a GULAG commander. The dear grandmother - she shed hot tears for Stalin. When do childhood memories lose their innocence? And how should the present judge the past? In <Grandchildren>, the directors Mikhail Kaluzhsky and Aleksandra Polivanova deal with one of the most traumatic periods in Russian history - the period of political persecution. As part of a co-production with the Sakharov Centre, the two directors cumulate the various aspects of personal memory through interviews with the descendants of Stalin‘s followers. Kaluzhsky and Polivanova use documentary sources to trace these aspects in their production. According to Kaluzhsky the direct truth does not lie within the recollection, but in the energy of a unique personal impression which flows into the collective memory.
