Art as a memorial In her installation <STARIE NOVOSTI> (<Old News>), ANASTASIA KHOROSHILOVA asks about the effects of traumatic events in our modern-day media society. She identifies their media impact as the latest sensation in our global current affairs. The assumed objective journalistic view is confronted with the reality of the subject and how it is engrained in the psyche of survivors. The mixed media installation by Khoroshilova highlights various points of view and perspectives: On the one hand the power of media images - the tragic siege at a school in Beslan (North Ossetia), which captured the world's attention from 1 to 3 September 2004 - and on the other hand the life-size photographs of women which were taken in 2010 when the artist visited the inhabitants of Beslan to research this almost forgotten drama and to demonstrate how briefly these events are etched in our collective memory. The work of Anastasia Khoroshilova enables this change of perspectives; in other words the reflection of various time levels of now and the past, as well as the coming to terms with both collective and individual traumatic experiences.
