‹October›
«New Art for a New Country!» was the motto in the Soviet Union during the first ten years after the October Revolution. In 1927, to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the October Revolution, the young Soviet state organised a magnificent gala concert, showcasing the best of vanguard works. In addition to established composers, such as Molosov, Polovinkin and Roslavez, the very young Dmitri Shostakovich was also commissioned to compose an orchestral work (2nd symphony for choir and orchestra, op. 14). It was demanded that art should promote the intellectual reorientation of society and immense pressure was placed on the composers. The task of bringing together the idea of vanguardism, the taste of the masses, as well as symphonies and working class songs presented an enormous challenge. Over 100 musicians of the BASEL SINFONIETTA and the Choir of the Gnessin Russian Music Academy ‹ALTRO CORO› will celebrate the start of this CULTURESCAPES Moscow in spectacular fashion with clanging machine sounds and workers choirs. Furthermore, a work by Arthur Lourié, ‹In the sanctuary of a golden dream›, will be performed.
