For the joint opening concert the Basel Sinfonietta presents ‹Epicycle I - Ísland› with contemporary compositions from the second largest island in Europe, to which many associate breath-taking nature, but only few music and sound. The music of Iceland is young, exciting and peculiar; the boundaries between genres are fluid. Among other pieces, the Basel Sinfonietta will play ‹Aeriality› by Anna Þorvaldsdóttir, one of the most successful young composers of Europe, and ‹Processions›, which Daníel Bjarnason, the conductor of the evening, wrote for the young Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson.
