For more than twenty years the Tokyo-born photographer and reporter Kyoichi Tsuzuki (*1956) has been travelling the length and breadth of Japan, capturing the country’s hidden treasures. Together with his camera he takes a look behind the scenes of this close-knit society and explores the private, sometimes bizarre lives of its people. But instead of showing a glamorous, high-gloss image of high-tech Japan, he tells unexpected personal stories, giving viewers an idea of vulnerabilities and desires.
In the 1990s, Tsuzuki also became known outside Japan. The current exhibition showcases hand-picked photographs from some of his earlier works. They usually depict rather bizarre Japanese everyday life aspects, popular cultural phenomena like karaoke or the so-called ‹love hotels›. These topics are in line with the current zeitgeist.
