Markthalle Basel offers gustatory access to Japan's capital city: the Japanese artist Haruna Nakayama and three events by Kulinarium Basel present culinary aspects of Japan. The works of Haruna Nakayama deal with foodstuff. She is an artist in residence of the International Exchange and Studio Program Basel (iaab) and she is part of the PORT JOURNEY PROJECT Basel – Yokohama.
During one week, Haruna creates in the Markthalle Basel her installation ‹kan-butsu› (the term refers to dried foods as they are common in traditional Japanese cooking). At the opening event, there will be tempura - the typical Japanese deep-fried street-food.
During her stay, she dries Swiss vegetables by hanging it up on long strings in the Markthalle. The following process of dehydration produces bits and pieces of a very intense taste. At the closing event, Haruna invites everybody to a communal meal: she will cook a soup from the pieces of vegetables, mushrooms, meat and whatever else she dried in her artistic work.
Visitors who join the opening event are asked to bring something they'd like to have deep-fried - even if it is rather difficult to fry such as ice-cream, a lollipop or cheese. Haruna is looking forward to the challenge!
While Haruna works at Markthalle, people interested are welcome to visit the artist and her work (no entry fee).
