Ensemble Boswil for Contemporary Music
Conductor: Seitaro Ishikawa
Shakuhachi: Dieter Zuisho Nanz
In cooperation with CULTURESCAPES, Ensemble Boswil led by guest conductor Seitaro Ishikawa will this year present contemporary Japanese music in its various stylistic forms. Ishikawa, born in Tokyo in 1985, conducted the Japan Youth Philharmonic Orchestra and is currently the conductor of the Nihon Club Orchestra in Düsseldorf, Germany.
Four masterpieces of the past thirty years will be performed: ‹Voyage X› (2009) by Toshio Hosokawa, ‹Si bleu si calme› (1997) by Misato Mochizuki, ‹RAIN SPELL› (1983) BY TORU TAKEMITSU and ‹Territory› (1974) by Joji Yuasa. With regard to the character of the individual pieces, there is a definite contrast between moving, rhythmically succinct works (Yuasa, Mochizuki) and lyrically meditative works (Takemitsu, Hosokawa).
While the pieces by Takemitsu and Yuasa will be performed by the chamber music instrumentation only, the entire 16-member ensemble will play the works of Hosokawa and Mochizuki. ‹Voyage X› by Hosokawa will be additionally supported by the traditional Japanese flute shakuhachi as a solo instrument. This special solo part will be assumed by Dieter Zuisho Nanz. Nanz teaches shakuhachi at Ateliers d’ethnomusicologie in Geneva and has given many solo performances in both Switzerland and Japan. He studied shakuhachi in Japan under the guidance of Kakiuchi Sanpo and Tahima Tadashi. The latter awarded him the title of ‹shihan› (master).
