As part of the festival ‹ZOOM-IN›
The approach of the sound artist Rie Nakajima (*1976) is anything but ordinary. Plastic cups, ping-pong balls, old toys, cables, unknown electronic devices and batteries: what looks like the contents of a jumble sale box, is actually the artist’s instrument or, more aptly, the musical and tonal components used for her PERFORMANCE.
The separation of stage and auditorium is only of minor importance to the Japanese performer. She is interested in the physical qualities of architectural spaces and how they interact with the body and sound of her music. Nakajima cares about the dimensions and characteristics of these spaces. She lets her objects – prepared everyday objects and toys – rattle, clank, bounce and wobble, thus opening up different perspectives of their interplay. During the performance, Rie Nakajima develops sound sculptures. Her excellent anarchic perception of music allows for an extraordinary experience for all participants.
The foursome Quartet in residence will subsequently perform their contemporary interpretation of chamber music with accordion, saxophone, percussion and electronic instruments.
