In 19th century, Japan saw fundamental reforms and opened its borders. Many Swiss emigrants decided to settle in Japan. They were among the most successful tradespeople and brought back ideas, information, art, photographies and cultural objects to their homecountry. In this way, these early travellers changed the way Japan was and is perceived in Switzerland.
