As part of the festival ‹ZOOM-IN›
In cooperation with the Berne zoom-in Festival, the guitarist Taku Sugimoto (*1965) is about to embark on a concert tour.
His MUSIC emphasises the space between the sounds; the gaps in musical pieces. Its reduced compositional style resembles traditional gagaku music, an extremely simple form of Japanese art music. The Tokyo-born musician was originally influenced by rock, blues and European-style free jazz. In the early 1990s, he decided to abandon the guitar in favour of the cello. This resulted in a change to his style of music, which gradually became more intimate with a chamber-musical character. After turning his attention back to the guitar, he continued along this path in solo projects and as one half of a duo. However, Taku Sugimoto’s increasingly restrained playing has always remained melodic.
The concerts in Geneva, Zürich and Berne will be followed by music from the Berne-based quartet Burkhard Beins/Jean-Philippe Gross/Christian Kobi/Jonas Kocher, who provide a contemporary interpretation of chamber music with accordion, saxophone, as well as percussion and electronic instruments.
