Nizami Ganjavi (1141-1209) lived and died in Azerbaijan. He was one of the most important poets of the medieval Orient and is still revered for his poems and epics in the countries of this region, and in particular in Azerbaijan. And it was Nizami who wove scattered and inconsistent Arabic legends into self-contained works. The verses combine the despair of lovers and the intensity of their unfulfilled and unbridled love for one another with Nizami‘s gift of describing colours, scents and sounds.
The Basel-based actors H.-Dieter and G. Antonia Jendreyko have embraced the tale of "Layla and Majnun". Their words bring to life this timeless tragic love story quite similar to Romeo and Juliet. They will be accompanied by the ud player Nehad El-Sayed.
