Rug knotting is considered one of the oldest crafts in Azerbaijan and other countries of the Caucasus region. Azerbaijan is even referred to as the birthplace of the art of rug weaving. These tasks are still traditionally carried out by women and the true skills of knotting rugs are handed down from one generation to the next. The symbols and motifs are derived from the old shamanic civilisations of the Middle East and are carefully woven with particular attention paid to the use of light. This blend of traditional and individual designs creates unique and amazing works of art, the oldest of which are either on show in renowned museums or change hands as treasured objects. The exhibition features a collection of 40 rugs from various regions of Azerbaijan - each telling a completely different story.
