The Jewish author Lev Nussimbaum, born in Baku in 1905, alias Kurban Said, wrote the enchanting and tragic love story of two religions and cultures. Ali, a young Muslim warrior, and Nino, the daughter of a Christian merchant, fall deeply in love.
However, their love is considered inacceptable due to the religious and cultural barriers separating them, but with the help of a mediator they are almost allowed to marry. But then someone abducts Nino, and according to Islamic law Ali must kill both his rival and his bride-to-be. First published in Vienna in 1937, the original version was unfortunately lost in the turmoil of the Second World War. However, the original version was republished in 2000. The young actors Erik De Quero (Next Level Parzival, Junges Theater Basel 2007) and Aite Tinga (Oedipus at Colonus, Theater Basel 2009) bring to life this wonderful "multicultural" novel in a play reading.
