Performance: Young Choreographers Project

Over the last few years there has been an active dance and performance scene developing in China's metropolises. In order to give these young and independent performance artists a platform, Caochangdi Workstation and Living Dance Studio brought the ‹Young Choreographers Project› to life in 2006. Some of these upcoming talents, who are now considered the new generation of the Chinese dance and performance scene, will present their works in Switzerland.

With ‹Silent Solo› Xiao Ke unmasks the conflicting nature of existence. To justify our beingness means to simultaneously justify our lies. Nothing belongs to you except yourself. After having experienced 12 years stage experience in classical dance, the choreographer founded her own dance studio in Shanghai in 1998. She has already worked with various international dance ensembles.

Since its founding in 2008, Tao Dance Company has participated in every contemporary dance festival in China. Choreographer and founder Tao Ye danced with the Jin Xing Company and performed with the Beijing Modern Dance Company before deciding to start his own project. In ‹Left & Right› he traces, together with dancer Duan Ni, the possibility of bringing emotion and rationality into accordance. Which types of relationships arise from their random encounter?

Duration: 20-30 min

Choreographer and dancer He Yufan has already worked with performance artists such as Cao Fei or Wang Jianwei. After studying architecture, he founded the Fan Troupe in 2006. In ‹Truth› he traces the meaning of the word truth. Truth is invisible for the eyes and inaudible to the ears, untouchable and unreachable - and yet it is always present. The performance consists of the interaction between dancer and camera. While the dancer again and again changes his roles and his own identity, the camera captures his movements and creates distance between the actor and the audience.

Zhang Mengqi graduated from the Dance Academy of China Minorities University in 2008. She now works as a freelance dancer in Beijing and has worked, for example, with the Living Dance Studio. On stage she reflects on her relationship with her mother, on failed communication, on farewells between mother and daughter. ‹Self-portrait and Dialogue with My Mother› refuses to look back on the past. It renders homage to a commonly shared future.

Choreography & dance: Zhang Mengqi

Duration: 27 min.

Li Ning, born in Shandong, is a sculptor and dancer, but first of all he is an autodidact. The ‹J-Town Physical Theatre & Film Lab› founded by him consists of a small circle of dancers and ‹guerrilla› performers. Li Nings works show contemporary Chinese society, expose the taste of true life and develop a very unique aesthetic style in the realm of experimental film and theatre. His performance ‹Sticky Tape - Solo› questions interpersonal relationships and social coherence in our world. The tape serves as a metaphor und reflects the longing urge for stability.

Choreography & performance: Li Ning

Duration: 15 min

Queersicht - ‹Filme of the Chinesischen Lgbt-World›
Chinese films are one of the main focuses at the 14th gay-lesbian film festival Queersicht in november 2010 in Bern. Since the foundation of the People's Republic of China in 1949, homosexuality was considered as a disease of the decadent west. In new millennium there was a liberalization - since 2001, gays and lesbians are no longer considered as mentally ill people.
