Based on 2000 years of tradition, the puppet plays from Quanzhou are one of the world's oldest and largest groups of performing puppet shows. It is an art form which has always been closely linked to religious activities due to the fact that the people used it as means of communication with the gods. Due to their shape and powder technique the beautifully carved puppets represent a wonderful example of preserved folk art. The puppet theatre performs its pieces with specifically composed melodies, so-called ‹Kuilei Diao›. More than 300 melodies as well as the documentation of the accompanying music on antique instruments have been preserved over the centuries.
Six different stories will be presented: "The promising opening ceremony", "The little ape leaves for the city", "Roulans journey", "Zhong Kui is drunk", "About the three fights with the skeleton Enchantress", "Lantern Festival".
