RMB City, developed by the video and installation artist Cao Fei, is an online artist community in the virtual world Second Life (SL); a reflection of the “real” world, that lives a life of its own, consisting of dreams and expectations, utopian thoughts, projects and transgressions. With “RMB City Opera”, Cao Fei links processes of the virtual city together with two dancers on stage. She researches the creative relationship between the two worlds and the explosive development of Chinese urbanity and culture. On the border between the past and future, between classical and contemporary realities, the connections to real and virtual identities are explored. The physical and virtual spaces become a stage for the interaction between actors and ‘avatars’.
