China with its 56 formally recognized minorities presents a real cultural patchwork. Over the centuries this variety has led to various singing techniques and traditions. The concert ‹Eastern Voices› assembles some of the most beautiful voices of China, from Mongolian throat-singing to Kunqu opera, from impressive polyphonic singing of the Qiang people to musical tales from Suzhou; all of them brought to the stages of Europe. With 23 singers from various regions in China, ‹Eastern Voices› shows the variety of passed-down vocal traditions. Each province has its own musical heritage, reflected by the different costumes and musical interpretations. Sometimes these provinces also have their own writing and language. This unusual concert framework brings Chinese Minorities such as Hani, Qiang, Mongolian, Miao, Naxi and Lisu together, some of which do not even have any stage experience. On stage instrumental finesse and traditional singing are combined to create a sweeping blow of musical Chinese tradition. This is musical art in its most original form.
