Sinfonieorchester Basel with Vassilis Varvaresos (piano) conducted by Francesc Prat
«A pupil of Schönberg, who, with a message that no one wanted to hear, returned to Athens, played violin for pittance, and died at the age of forty-five.». This is how the English writer Nor-man Lebrecht summarises the tragic life of the composer Nikos Skalkottas. His return to Greece in 1933 was to be a disaster. Although Skalkottas composed relentlessly, his works remained unpublished, unplayed and unknown in his lifetime. For financial security Skalkottas worked through this intense creative period, in which he also produced his Piano Concerto No. 3 (1939), as a musician. The pianist Vassilis Varvaresos plays this piano concerto to conclude CULTURES-CAPES Greece, together with members of the Symphony Orchestra Basel, conducted by Francesc Prat.
