With Miguel Pisonero Rivero (piano) and Daniel Schneller (moderator)
The main focus of the CULTURESCAPES classical music program is the work of the Greek com-poser Nikos Skalkottas; alongside Dimitri Mitropoulos the most important representative of New Music in Greece. He studied violin at the Athens Conservatory, and from 1927 to 1932 he studied under Arnold Schönberg at the Prussian Academy of Arts. Skalkottas is regarded as the favourite pupil of the Austrian composer and musical theorist, who in turn had a decisive in-fluence on the compositional work of his master pupil, alongside folkloristic elements from the homeland. Miguel Pisonero Rivero plays a piano recital with works by Greek composers, including ‹Sonatine for Piano› by Theodorakis, ‹6 Songs for Piano› by Xenakis, as well as Variations, and the ‹Suite No. 3› or the ‹Procession to Acheron› by Nikos Skalkottas. The evening is supplemen-ted by a film about the life and work of Skalkottas.
