In Yasmin Levy’s music there is a tension between the purity of Ladino (Judeo-Spanish music) and the fiery heart of flamenco. Her main aim is to establish a worthy memorial to the rich array of traditional Ladino songs which her father collected and preserved during his lifetime. She is able to present a wonderful blend of songs which align the heart and soul.
As Yasmin Levy explains: ‹There’s a very traditional way of singing Ladino. I learnt it by listening to women singing and it’s beautiful, but I missed the passion. Flamenco is nothing but passion.›
The programme not only consists of Ladino and flamenco traditions, but also of contemporary material; and even includes a song by Leonard Cohen.
In her programme Sentir, Yasmin Levy allows us to share her vision; she is able to integrate these two very different musical worlds – seemingly effortlessly – at the highest level.
