Evil spirits are coming to town: During the Sabbath dinner, a Jewish couple becomes trapped between two worlds and is haunted by the figures of a cabalistic legend of love, death and fulfilment. Together they remember the tale of a young man who was unable to marry the girl he loved and died of a broken heart. When the girl married another, his spirit took possession of her – and only a sacrifice could break this curse.
Thirty years after its premiere, the demons from Bruce Myers’ piece ‹The Dybbuk› still unfold their full might. During the CULTURESCAPES festival, the legendary production, which premiered at the Schaubühne at Lehniner Platz in Berlin in 1981 before touring Europe, will return to Basel with its original cast. Urs Bihler and Miriam Goldschmidt conjure a magical world between reality and fiction with their poetic interplay.
