Mit Cristian Mungiu (*1968), Cristi Puiu (*1967), Corneliu Porumboiu (*1975) oder dem leider viel zu früh verstorbenen Cristian Nemescu (1979-2006) hat eine junge Generation von Filmemachern eine bemerkenswerte Fülle von Kurz- und Langfilmen hervorgebracht: Sie befassen sich mit der Verquickung von historischen Gegebenheiten und individuellen Sehnsüchten («California Dreamin' (Endless)»), beleuchten die Revolution von 1989 aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln («12:08 East of Bucharest», «The Paper will be Blue» (nur in Zürich zu sehen)) oder setzen sich auf originelle Weise mit dem gesellschaftlichen Umbruch im Postkommunismus auseinander («Occident», «Trafic», «The Death of Mister Lazarescu», «Humanitarian Aid»).
