Andrzej Stasiuk and Monika Sznajderman – Poland yesterday and today

Andrzej Stasiuk and Monika Sznajderman founded the publishing house «Czarne», which for many years has been publishing works by the most exciting Central European authors.

In many of his books, Andrzej Stasiuk takes a cultural and autobiographical look at Eastern Europe from its margins – most recently in «Der Osten» (East) (Suhrkamp 2016). In «Die Pfefferfälscher» (The Pepper Forgers) (Suhrkamp 2018), Monika Sznajdermanspeaks with rare urgency of the tragedy of centuries of Polish-Jewish coexistence, which not only affects her own family but society as a whole to this day. Together they founded the publishing house «Czarne», based in a small town in south-eastern Poland, which for many years has been publishing works by the most exciting Central European authors.
