In many of his books, Andrzej Stasiuk takes a cultural and autobiographical look at Eastern Europe from its margins – most recently in «Der Osten» (East) (Suhrkamp 2016). In «Die Pfefferfälscher» (The Pepper Forgers) (Suhrkamp 2018), Monika Sznajdermanspeaks with rare urgency of the tragedy of centuries of Polish-Jewish coexistence, which not only affects her own family but society as a whole to this day.
