What determines our understanding of history? What shapes the memories of our own biography? Twelve Swiss and international artists deal in various ways with the history of a country, while offering their perspectives, comments and memories to explore their own personal history and current events. This includes four top-class Polish artists: Piotr Uklański's project «Poland» includes photographs that he has taken in his home country since 2015, as well as photographs of symbolic sites of the Polish diaspora. Anna Molska's video works reflect the nostalgia of socialist modernity and its remaining impressions in today’s world. She films performances with ordinary people and not with actors, which gives her work authenticity and natural spontaneity. Anna Ostoya's works connect the past with the future. The complex and multi-layered works challenge viewers to deal with topics and to reflect on their own contemporary experiences. Last but not least, video works by Artur Żmijewski are part of this exhibition, for which CULTURESCAPES has also put together a retrospective.
Featuring works by Maja Bajavić, Sabine Hertig, Cécile Hummel, William E. Jones, Zoe Leonard, Hanne Lippard, Anna Molska, Anna Ostoya, Katja Schenker, Dorian Sari, Piotr Uklański and Artur Żmijewski.
